Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a structural engineer?

1

Yes — any project that involves structural changes (new construction, additions, renovations, removing walls) requires a structural engineer for permit approval. Beyond the requirement, Westwind helps with the planning and advises on structural solutions to achieve your layouts. For designers and builders, Westwind is also an essential partner who clarifies constructability and coordinates with your design team.

Structural design for residential projects typically ranges from $2,500 to $6,000+ depending on scope and complexity, and we quote fixed fees upfront so there are no surprises. Construction-phase support and other variable work is billed hourly. The best way to know your exact cost is to reach out with your project details, and we'll send you a clear proposal with timing and pricing.

Does Westwind offer BIM or 3D model coordination?

4

We primarily use Revit for preparing our structural drawing packages, and can provide BIM/3D model coordination with your design team on complex architectural projects. We also have experience integrating 3D building scans for renovation projects where capturing existing conditions is critical. Contact us to discuss your project and learn more.

Is Westwind familiar with pre-fabricated construction?

5

Yes. We have experience designing structural systems tailored to prefabricated and modular construction methods. We work with builders and manufacturers to ensure designs account for transportation, assembly sequencing, and site-specific conditions. If you're considering prefab for your project, let us know early so we can integrate the structural design from the start.
